It’s Super Bowl Sunday, which means that millions and millions of us all across the globe will be tuning into the big game this evening. We can expect above 100 million viewers to tune in in the US alone, but then there are international territories such as the UK, in which viewers stay up until the small hours of the morning to see the big game.

Now, whilst the game is one part of the big night, there’s another part, and that’s the Super Bowl Half Time Show. The Half Time Show is always hotly anticipated, as a global superstar takes to the stage for approximately 13 minutes, and it’s probably going to be the biggest stage of their career. With above 100 million viewers watching in the US, it’s the biggest platform these artists will have in their career.

Tonight, Justin Timberlake is set to headline the Super Bowl Halftime show, and it’s going to be a spectacular affair if the photos we’ve seen are anything to go by. However, many have been before him, and many have set the stage on fire. So, we’ve had a look back through the many artists who have headline the Halftime show over the years, and here are some of our favourites:

6. (2012)

So, we’re going to go on record and say that ’s Super Bowl Halftime show was one of our favourites. It was a mess in parts, but it had all the elements there. It was elaborate, it was on the top, it was extravagant, and you couldn’t take your eyes off the whole thing – pretty much everything you want and need in a Halftime show, right?

The Roman-styled costumes, the collaborations with Nicki Minaj, CeeLo Green, LMFAO, and M.I.A. made the whole show. Also, how could we ever forget the lawsuit that ensued when M.I.A basically went AWOL and flipped his middle finger to the whole country and beyond.

5. (2015)

Okay, so ’s Super Bowl Halftime show set was not everyone’s cup of tea, but it had some pretty iconic moments. Do we all remember Left Shark? Yes. Do we all remember THAT performance from Missy Elliot? Erm, YES. Do we all remember rising a giant tiger? HELL YES!

No expense was spared when it came to the set, specially the pyrotechnics budget. The wardrobe budget must have also been pretty spectacular as she had a few changes during her 13-minute set, but one of our favourite moments was Katy flying across the stadium on a giant star whilst belting out ‘Firework’.

4. (1993)

One thing we remember about headlining the Super Bowl Halftime show in 1993 is the way he popped out of the bottom of the stage and command the attention of everyone by just staring into the crowd. Nobody said a word, everyone was hooked – it was tense, it was energetic, and we took a little time to prepare ourselves for what was to come.

Michael performed some of his biggest hits at the show, was whilst it looks a little low key compared to some of the major productions we see today, it’s still up there as one of the best.

3. (2017)

took to the Super Bowl Halftime stage last year, and she had some pretty big shoes to fill from previous years, but the show was as energetic, extravagant, and over the top as you’d expect.

started the performance from the ROOF of the stadium, before jumping off and being lowered down into the stadium. If that is not one of the best ways then Super Bowl Halftime show has EVER been started, then we don’t know what is.

If you look at previous Halftime show sets, and think about what you want to be included in a Halftime show, then you’ll know that Gaga threw everything AND the kitchen sink at the set. It was energetic, it was lively, it included some of her biggest hits, and it also included Gaga ending the performance by catching a football and flinging herself off a set of steps.

NOBODY can question this is one of the best Halftime shows we have ever seen. Really, Gaga ties at second position with .

2. (2007)

It’s over 10 years now since took to the stage, but it’s still one of the most iconic and powerful sets we have ever seen at the Super Bowl Halftime show. changed gears pretty rapidly during his set from rocking out to ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ to one of our all-time favourite songs, ‘Purple Rain’, with actual rain. Oh, and then there was the house of his symbol guitar to make a rather phallic-looking outline.

Beyonce (2013)

No surprise here, but our favourite Super Bowl Halftime performer is the Queen of music herself, Beyonce Knowles-Carter. For the Super Bowl, Beyonce went full on Sasha Fierce as literally set fire to the stage. Not only that, Beyonce staged a Destiny’s Child reunion with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.

The smouldering set included some of her biggest hits such as Baby Boy, Crazy in Love, Love on Top, Single Ladies, and Independent Women.

In fact, Beyonce’s set was that flawless and iconic that she blew the power in the stadium after the Halftime show*. The second half of the game was delayed whilst they sorted the power issue out.

*Okay, so we can’t say Beyonce blew the power in the stadium, but as it happened AFTER she owned the stage, nobody would be surprised if she had.

We’d like to give Coldplay a special mention for having a boring, lacklustre show that only gave us LIFE when Beyonce took to the pitch to give a fierce performance of ‘Formation.

So, how will Justin Timberlake stack up? Only time will tell…
